Covid Ireland: Hotels forced to adhere to midnight curfew as weddings and gigs hit by U-turn

Hotels have been told that they will have to adhere to the midnight curfew in a U-turn which will see weddings and gigs impacted.

The Irish Hotel Federation (IHF) said they received “further clarification” and “contrary to earlier indication by the Government” the new rule will apply to residents staying at a hotel.

On Tuesday, the Taoiseach told the Irish Mirror that the midnight curfew would not affect residents that were staying at a hotel as they were a “separate sector.”

But now the IHF have told their members that effective from Thursday night, hotel bars and residents’ bars will also have to have all customers off their premises by midnight.

Pubs, nightclubs and restaurants also have to adhere to this rule from Thursday night.

In a note sent to hotels and seen by the Irish Mirror, the email read: “Regrettably, this means that there are no exemptions for residents staying in hotels and that the midnight closing time also applies to weddings and all other functions in the hotel.”

The email circulated to hotels across the country also read that “some members have reported that events are starting earlier, which is permitted provided function rooms are vacated by 12 midnight, regardless of whether guests are residents or not.

“Please note that the requirement for electronic ticketing (excluding weddings) continues to apply for indoor events involving dancing or non-seated hospitality, such as drinks receptions.”
