Covid Ireland good news as 'phenomenal' vaccine rollout in healthcare workers has 'turned off' cases

The COVID-19 vaccine rollout has "turned off" cases of the coronavirus in healthcare workers, a member of NPHET has said.

They have hailed the "phenomenal" effects it has had on the spread of COVID-19 within the Irish healthcare system.

Professor Mary Horgan, President of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, told Claire Byrne on RTE Radio 1 today that it is a clear sign that "vaccines are working".

She said while numbers are dropping across Ireland, the significant drop in healthcare workers has a lot to with the vaccine as well as the slowdown in spread.

She said: "It's been phenomenal. We were tracking the number of healthcare workers infected from January into February and essentially it just turned off in February, and likewise the number of hospital admissions."

In the same show, concerns around the supply of vaccines in Dublin and other parts of Ireland was discussed, with GPs raising concern about the rollout.

Ireland missed its target of reaching 100,000 vaccines distributed last week, as it emerged that the HSE administered 81,843 doses.

The HSE said it was alerted by AstraZeneca late last week that two deliveries, one last week and one this week, totalling 25,000 vaccines, were deferred.

The HSE said it has been assured that the shortfall will be recovered during this month.

In a statement issued today, the Government said: "Ireland is currently above the EU average with approximately 3% of our population fully vaccinated. 6% of our population has received at least one dose of vaccine and 8.8 doses per 100 of our population have been administered.

"The COVID-19 Vaccination Programme strategy is to distribute all vaccines that we receive as quickly as is operationally possible, subject to ensuring the availability of the second dose. Our programme is only limited by supply, and the rollout plans must be flexible to accommodate unforeseen events."
