Covid Ireland: 8,039 new cases confirmed as hospital numbers jump after restrictions ease

The Health Protection Surveillance Centre has today been notified of 8,039 new cases of Covid-19.

The figure is made up of 3,692 confirmed PCR tests and 4,347 positive antigen test registered through the HSE portal.

As of 8am on Monday, 885 patients are in hospital with Covid, of which 76 are in ICU.

That's a rise of 40 in hospital numbers, while the ICU total is the same as what it was yesterday.

The stats come on the first Monday after Ireland's 'grand reopening'.

An address to the nation from the Taoiseach last Friday confirmed that Ireland would be taking a major step towards "normality".

That included the lifting of the 8pm curfew on pubs and restaurant opening hours, leading to scenes of celebration all across the country on Saturday evening.

Crowds were once again welcomed back to sporting and indoor cultural events too, with Munster being able to allow just over 13,000 fans into Thomond Park on Sunday for their European Champions Cup victory over Wasps.

However, the World Health Organisation is urging people to be wary that the pandemic is not over.

Dr David Nabarro, the WHO's special envoy for Covid-19, told Sky News: "I keep wondering what the people who make these amazing predictions know that I and my colleagues in the World Health Organisation don't know.

"You see, what people are seeing from around the world and reporting to the WHO is this is still a very, very dangerous virus, especially for people who have not been vaccinated and who've not been exposed to it before.

"It can also mutate and form variants and we've seen several but we know there are more not far away.

"So quite honestly, we are not saying that this should be considered to be like flu or indeed like anything else.

"It's a new virus, and we must go on treating it as though it is full of surprises, very nasty and rather cunning."
