Covid Ireland: 5,156 new cases confirmed as restrictions could ease 'quickly' after Omicron analysis

A total of 5,156 new Covid-19 cases have been confirmed in Ireland, while 503 people are currently being treated for the virus in hospital.

While there are now 110 patients being treated in ICUs across the country.

The latest figures were released by the Department of Health on Sunday.

It comes after Minister Michael McGrath claimed Ireland's new restrictions will be removed "quite quickly" if the Omicron variant is less dangerous than initially feared.

The Fianna Fail TD said that the decision to implement the measures was "precautionary" due to the lack of knowledge about the variant.

Minister McGrath added that if Omicron "does not meet our worst fears" then restrictions will be removed "quite quickly".

He told RTE's The Week in Politics: "The government has accepted the advice of NPHET in relation to where we stand right now, and it is because the incidence of Delta has stabilised but is at a higher level than we would like.

"We are coming into the Christmas period where inevitably there will be more socialisation, we will all want to meet with the people we love, our families and our friends and so on.

"We do have a new emerging threat in relation to Omicron and we simply do not have answers to some pretty fundamental questions about what the impact of that will be.

"Is it more transmissible, how does it interact with the vaccine for example, is it more dangerous at the level of each individual whom it infects.

"So we need answers to those questions, and the decisions we have made are precautionary in nature, they are based on public health advice, and I expect if the findings of all of the research that is going on globally into Omicron find it does not meet our worst fears then we will be in a position to remove those restrictions based on public health advice over the period ahead quite quickly."
