Covid Ireland: 4,764 new cases as Government warn of possible further restrictions before Christmas

The Health Protection Surveillance Centre has today been notified of 4,764 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

As of 8am today, 598 COVID-19 patients are hospitalised, of whom 126 are in ICU.

It comes as Leo Varadkar warned Ireland could need the imposition of further restrictions before Christmas.

The Tanaiste said that even though additional measures might be needed to curb the spread of Covid-19, the government is hoping to avoid a lockdown scenario.

"None of us" want to see added restrictions ahead of Christmas, Dr Ronan Glynn said, but if NPHET "see a further disimprovement in the trajectory of the disease" then "we're going to have to make recommendations to address those concerns".

Speaking on Thursday, Leo Varadkar said the idea of Ireland entering lockdown in the coming weeks should be avoided, but additional restrictions cannot be ruled out.

"In the last number of weeks and in the last couple of days, I have detected an air of fatalism and fatigue and that's understandable, and a certain degree of hopelessness," he told RTE's Today with Claire Byrne show.

"But I actually think we have some reasons to be hopeful, we should keep the faith, there's a lot of things that are still under our control and there are yet a lot of things that could go in our favour.
