Covid Ireland: 3,248 new cases confirmed with 478 in hospital

A further 3,428 confirmed cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed in the last 24 hours.

As of 8am today, 478 Covid-19 patients are hospitalised, of which 75 are in ICU.

Ireland's Covid situation has been described as a "concern" and premises not asking for Covid certs has been raised as one of the biggest issues.

The Department of the Taoiseach sent a strong message to hospitality warning "if we do not engender a sense of collective effort, it will severely hamper our capacity to get transmission under control."

The statement adds: "In turn, this will limit our options in terms of reducing the burden of disease and mortality of this latest wave."

Dr Tony Holohan weighed in behind this argument on Saturday and asked punters not to enter settings that don't request your proof of vaccine or recovery.

The CMO said: "If you are in an an environment where you're not asked for your Covid cert or where hand washing facilities are not present, or mask wearing is not as it should be - you should look at that as a riskier environment than it should be, and you should feel empowered to leave."
