Covid Ireland: 2,399 new cases confirmed by NPHET as Dr Tony Holohan gives bleak prediction

There have been 2,399 further cases of Covid-19 confirmed in Ireland this evening by the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET).

As of 8am on Tuesday morning, there were 473 people being treated in hospital for the virus, of which 74 are in ICU.

The 5-day moving average has risen to 1,890.

It comes as Taoiseach Micheal Martin announced that not all restrictions will be lifted on October 22 as planned.

In outlining three key measures to the Irish public, he said people should wear masks, event organisers should check people for a vaccine pass and those who are unvaccinated should get the jab.

Mr Martin confirmed that nightclubs can reopen but said officials will work with the industry in the coming days regarding capacity, vaccine passes and other rules.

He confirmed there will be “anomalies” and different rules for pubs and nightclubs.

There will be no capacity limit on indoor or outdoor events - giving major sporting events and concerts the green light.

Mr Martin confirmed that the 100 person cap on the number of guests permitted at weddings will also be lifted from October 22.

The Taoiseach also said legislation will likely be extended until February which will underpin the use of vaccine certs, mask wearing and physical distancing measures.

His announcement follows a grim prediction from the Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan.

The CMO warned Health Minister Stephen Donnelly that there could be up to 1,000 people in hospital by the end of November if the government pushed ahead with lifting all remaining restrictions.

Speaking to the Irish Mirror before Cabinet, Minister Donnelly said he has received updated modelling from NPHET’s Professor Philip Nolan.

He said: “The no policy change position is that if we were essentially to not continue with the restrictions, in other words if we were to remove all restrictions from this Friday, the modelling suggests by the end of November, [we’d] be at about 800 to 1,000 hospital cases with about, which is probably more important, about 150 to 200 of those being in ICU."

Minister Donnelly also said Dr Holohan told him the situation is going to get worse before it gets better.

He added: “The advice from Dr Holohan to me is that it’s going to get worse before it’s going to get better because there has been an increase in cases and we haven’t yet seen that increase in cases translate into hospital and ICU."
