Covid Ireland: 1,499 new cases confirmed by NPHET with 300 patients now in hospital

There have been 1,499 further cases of Covid-19 confirmed in Ireland this evening by the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET).

The Department of Health says there are now 300 people in hospital, with 63 of those in ICU.

The figures mark a decrease on Monday's hospital numbers when 310 patients were being treated for the virus, of which 66 were in ICU.

It comes as Ireland's resilience in dealing with the coronavirus pandemic has been deemed the best in the world, according to a new report.

Ireland has topped Bloomberg’s Covid Resilience rankings after a "startling turnaround" since it recorded the world's worst outbreak at the start of 2021.

According to the media outlet, "Ireland used a strategy common across Europe that’s emerging as a global model of success: largely limiting quarantine-free international travel to the immunized helps hold down serious illness and death even as infections spread; allowing some domestic freedoms only for inoculated people drives up the local vaccination rate."

The Covid Resilience Ranking is a monthly snapshot of where the virus is being handled the most effectively across the world’s biggest 53 economies.

It is compiled using 12 data indicators that span virus containment, the quality of healthcare, vaccination coverage, overall mortality and progress toward restarting travel and easing border curbs.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin said the ranking was a "testament to the hard work of the HSE and the Irish people".

The Health Minister Stephen Donnelly also hailed the news, commenting: "I really want to say thanks to you all for your collective efforts in making us best in the world for Covid resilience.

"Time and again you did the right thing. You listened to us and worked with us - on Covid restrictions and coming forward for your vaccine."

The CEO of the HSE Paul Reid added on Twitter: "There have been really tough times for everyone. But we have had a good, coherent and cohesive response overall to Covid-19 from the public and the health services. Good to see Ireland ranked now as No 1 in the World's Covid Resilience ranking."
