Covid Ireland: 1,352 new cases confirmed by NPHET with 177 patients in hospital

1,352 new cases of Covid-19 have been reported in Ireland today.

177 people are in hospital with the virus, 27 of which are in ICU.

The five-day moving average of new cases currently stands at 1,388.

Meanwhile, the HSE have hailed the Irish public after an 'inspiring weekend' for the vaccination rollout programme.

Dozens of centres have been operating on a walk-in basis across the country over the bank holiday weekend as the vaccination programme continues at a significant pace.

More than 10,000 people got vaccinated at temporary walk-in centres across Ireland on Saturday.

That was backed up by a further 8,000 people on Sunday, with some centres remaining open on Monday to get as many jabs into arms as is possible.

And HSE CEO Paul Reid has provided even more details in a tweet where he hailed the Irish public.

He tweeted: "An inspiring weekend for the vaccination programme. Over 18,000 people have availed of Walk In Centres so far. Continuing today in 26 locations. People of all ages attending, 50% aged 16-17 years old & 64% 19 or under.

Long queues have been observed at the centres across the weekend, with many young people among those waiting in line for a first jab.

Twenty of the centres remain open on Bank Holiday Monday.

Saturday also saw Ireland mark a landmark in the vaccine rollout when the country overtook the UK in terms of percentage of adults fully vaccinated.

It represented a significant turnaround after the early stages of the vaccine programme were hit by delays associated with EU supply issues.

In the spring there was speculation the UK might even move to donate surplus vaccines to Ireland later in the year to help it address the shortfall in jabs.
