Covid infections falling in 42 areas across England amid hopes of early lockdown end

Covid case numbers are being driven down in cities, towns and villages across England as hopes of an early exit from lockdown rise.

Downing Street has said Boris Johnson will reveal on Monday whether the delayed fourth and final phase of the roadmap out of lockdown will be brought forward.

Restrictions had been due to ease on June 21, but the date was pushed back to July 19 due to Delta variant fears.

But reports claim the Prime Minister will address the nation on Monday to announce whether remaining restrictions can instead be lifted on July 5.

The number of coronavirus cases in the UK reached the highest level since mid-February today, as a further 11,625 cases were reported.

However hospitalisations and death rates are not matching the pace, with the UK's vaccination rollout taking effect after more than 43 million first doses were administered. .

Separate officials suggest eight in 10 people now carry antibodies against the virus.

But one popular British beach holiday spot is nevertheless recording a spike in cases - leading to a local quarrel over who is to blame.

Of the 315 local areas in England, 269 (85%) have seen a rise in rates, 42 (13%) have seen a fall and four are unchanged, according to the latest official figures updated on Tuesday.

The figures are from the updated list calculated by the PA news agency for every local authority area in England, based on Public Health England data published on June 22 on the Government's coronavirus dashboard.

The figures, for the seven days to June 18, are based on the number of people who have tested positive for Covid-19 in either a lab-reported or rapid lateral flow test, by specimen date.

Blackburn with Darwen in Lancashire continues to have the highest rate, with 776 new cases in the seven days to June 18 - the equivalent of 518.4 cases per 100,000 people.

However this is down from 595.9 in the seven days to June 11, as the area begins to reverse its high rates of the virus amid the ongoing grapple to drive back the spread of the Delta variant.

Hyndburn in Lancashire has the second highest rate, up from 446.7 to 460.2, with 373 new cases.

Ribble Valley , also in Lancashire, has the third highest rate, but its figures are also down - from 479.6 to 405.7 - with 247 new cases.

The five areas with the biggest week-on-week rises are:

Newcastle upon Tyne (up from 130.4 to 263.9)
Darlington , Durham (30.9 to 151.7)
Harborough , Leicestershire (36.2 to 154.6)
County Durham (80.9 to 193.7)
Chorley , Lancashire (227.5 to 337.5)

Cornwall is also recording a steep rise in Covid cases, leading local leaders to hit back at accusations the influx of international visitors for the G7 summit caused the spike.

Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly are recording a case rate of 147.4, (843 cases), shooting up from 60.7, (347) the previous week.

According to Cornwall Live, Truro and Falmouth MP Cherilyn Mackrory accused locals blaming of "scaremongering" on Facebook as they blamed the rise in infections on the G7.

Cornwall Council, public health officials and the Government have all said that there is no evidence that the spike is linked to the summit of world leaders in Carbis Bay.

Public health officials instead said the rise was initially spotted at the university campus in Penryn and is largely affecting younger people yet to be vaccinated.

They also highlighted the large number of visitors who travelled to sunny Cornwall during the half term holiday as well as locals who travelled in and out of other holiday spots during the break.

The 42 areas where case numbers are falling

These areas are recording falling case numbers. They are ranked in order of highest Covid infection rates to lowest.

The rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people.

Data for the most recent four days (June 19-22) has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.

Here is the list in full. From left to right, it reads: name of local authority; rate of new cases in the seven days to June 18; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to June 18; rate of new cases in the seven days to June 11; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to June 11.
