Covid infection rates across Greater Manchester higher than national average as almost 60,000 new cases are recorded in a week

Coronavirus infection rates are now higher than the national average in Greater Manchester and are continuing to rise in all ten of its boroughs.

It comes after data revealed that almost 60,000 people tested positive in the week ending December 31 - a huge rise of 14,771 on the week before.

As of the same week, Wigan continues to have the highest coronavirus infection rate across Greater Manchester with a rate of 2,435.4 per 100,000 people.

The lowest infection rate is in Manchester, where the rate is 1836.3 cases per 100,000 people.

In Greater Manchester as a whole, the infection rate is now 2079.2 cases per 100,000 population.

The infection rate in the region is higher than the national average, which is 1625.1 cases per 100,000 people.

A total of 58,958 people tested positive for coronavirus across Greater Manchester in the week which ended on December 31.

The Greater Manchester weekly total has increased by 14771 cases compared to the previous week, which means the infection rate was up 33 per cent in the last week..

The infection rate is higher than the national average in all ten local authorities in Greater Manchester.

Hospital admissions

In the week ending on December 26, a total of 500 patients were admitted to Greater Manchester NHS hospitals with Covid-19. That is 182 more than the week before, a rise of 57 per cent.

On Tuesday December 28, there were 39 Mechanical Ventilation (MV) beds occupied by Covid patients in Greater Manchester NHS hospitals. That is six fewer than a week earlier.

This is the most recent available data for hospital admissions, the figures for NHS trusts are not updated daily.

Deaths

In the week ending December 31, a total of 43 people died within 28 days of a positive Covid test across Greater Manchester, which is 3 fewer than the week before.

Wigan

In Wigan, there were 8054 positive Covid-19 tests in the week ending December 31, which is 3612 more than the previous 7 days.

Wigan has the highest infection rate in the region. The infection rate in Wigan is up slightly compared with the previous day and the week-on-week trend is up by 81 per cent.

Bury

In Bury, the number of cases is up by 31 per cent compared to the previous week - leaving the infection rate at 1950.1 cases per 100,000 population.

There were 3719 positive Covid-19 tests in Bury in the week ending December 31, which was 871 more than the previous 7 days.

Oldham

There was a rise of 59 per cent in cases in Oldham over the week ending December 31, and the infection rate is now 1955.2 cases per 100,000 population.

Oldham recorded 4646 positive Covid-19 tests over the seven-day period, and that is 1728 more than the previous week.

Bolton

Bolton is an area where the trend is up. The latest infection rate here is 1913.6 cases per 100,000 people.

There were 5516 cases recorded in Bolton, which is 2060 more than the previous week - a rise of 60 per cent.

Stockport

In Stockport, the latest infection rate is 2236.3 cases per 100,000 people and the number of cases has gone up by 29 per cent.

A total of 6579 people tested positive for Covid in Stockport over the seven days ending on December 31, which is 1469 more than the week before.

Tameside

Tameside recorded 4997 coronavirus cases, which is 1426 more than in the previous seven days.

The latest infection rate in Tameside is 2200.2 cases per 100,000 people and that is up 40 per cent week-on-week.

Rochdale

Rochdale saw a total of 4427 cases in the week ending December 31, which is 1679 more than the previous week. That is a rise of 61 per cent.

In Rochdale, the most recent coronavirus infection rate is now 1979.4 cases per 100,000 people.

Trafford

The trend is up in Trafford, where there were 4865 positive Covid-19 tests in the week ending December 31, which is 623 more than the previous 7 days. That is up by 15 per cent compared to the previous week.

The latest infection rate in Trafford is 2047.7 cases per 100,000 people, which is higher than the national average.

Salford

There were 5950 positive tests over the last week in Salford, which is 1125 more than in the previous week.

The week-on-week trend in Salford is up by 23 per cent and the latest infection rate is 2265.0 cases per 100,000 people.

Manchester

Manchester, which has the lowest infection rate in the region, recorded 10205 positive Covid-19 tests in the week ending December 31, which is 178 more than the previous 7 days.

The coronavirus infection rate in Manchester is now 1836.3 cases per 100,000 people and is up by two per cent week-on-week.
