Covid infection rate figures for every council area as part of Public Health Scotland update

There have been 1,686 fresh Covid cases detected in Scotland – as the number of people being treated in hospital for the illness remains static.

The Scottish Government and Public Health Scotland have this afternoon published the latest sets of statistics as part of the national Covid-19 daily briefing.

Nationally, there are 529 patients being treated in hospital which is the same number as yesterday. There are currently 51 people with the disease being treated in ICU.

The number of newly-reported positive coronavirus cases recorded by NHS Ayrshire & Arran has risen by 103 to 23,352.

Of the new cases, 42 were from East Ayrshire and 41 were attributed to South Ayrshire. There were 20 new cases in North Ayrshire.

A total of 334,141 positive tests have now been recorded from 2.406 million tests carried out since the start of the pandemic.

According to Public Health Scotland's rolling seven-day infection rate per 100,000 population, Midlothian has the highest infection rate in the country – at 419.6 as of Tuesday, July 20.

The second-highest is Dundee City which has a rate of 334.9 while City of East Lothian (321.2) has the third-highest rate.

Locally, South Ayrshire's infection rate stands at 190.0 with East Ayrshire at 167.2. North Ayrshire's is 135.8.

Currently, 20 of Scotland's 32 council regions have an infection rate below the national average of 254.8.

Seven further deaths have been confirmed in the last 24 hours which means 7,820 people have passed away since March 2020.

However, data from the National Records of Scotland (NRS) shows 10,268 deaths had been registered up to Sunday, July 18 where the disease was mentioned on the death certificate.

Across the UK, the figure is 128,823 as of last night.

There are 21 patients being treated for the disease in Ayrshire hospitals, which is up two on yesterday, and fewer than five in ICUs.

Nationally, a total of 3,987,074 people have received the first dose of a Covid vaccine and 3,010,505 have received their second dose.
