Covid in Scotland: Six deaths reported in last 24 hours as cases rise by 1,003

Six people with a confirmed case of Covid-19 has passed away in the past 24 hours, bringing Scotland's death toll under this measurement to 6,106.

The latest statistics released by the Scottish Government also reveal that 1,003 new cases were confirmed overnight - making up 5.1% of all cases and bringing the total to 179,685.

291 of these were in Greater Glasgow and Clyde, while 176 were in Lanarkshire.

1,941 people are currently in hospital with coronavirus, while 143 are in intensive care.

Meanwhile, 566,269 people have received the first dose of the Covid vaccination and 7,794 have received their second dose.

Nicola Sturgeon is expected to make an announcement in the Scottish Parliament on Tuesday afternoon on whether children will return to school anytime soon.

It is more than five weeks after Scotland imposed level four lockdown across the mainland, and a fortnight after the Scottish Government opted twice to delay a return to school for most children after the Christmas holidays.

It comes after one of the First. Minister's top covid advisors highlighted the potential damage to children being kept out of school is being underestimated.

Professor Devi Sridhar tweeted: "I’m increasingly convinced by data from countries across the world that we are underestimating the harms of keeping young kids out of school and overplaying their role in transmission. Children should be in school."
