Covid in Scotland: Local leisure centre closes after virus outbreak linked to school pupils

A Midlothian leisure centre has closed temporarily following a coronavirus outbreak.

Midlothian Council confirmed on Friday that Lasswade Leisure Centre would close until schools break up for Christmas.

They added that it was a "precautionary measure" after a "small number" of people across Lasswade High School and the leisure centre tested positive for coronavirus.

It came after a letter from the Lothian NHS Board notified parents and carers at Lasswade High School of a "small number of confirmed cases".

Around 160 pupils at the secondary school were said to be self-isolating earlier this week, after coming into close contact with those who had tested positive.

The leisure centre is already closed to the public during school hours, however the measure has been taken because a "high number" of locals use the facilities in the evenings.

The centre will reopen at 4pm next week on Tuesday (22 December).

"In a bid to keep pupils, staff and the wider public safe, it is deemed advisable to close the centre until the end of term," a spokesperson for Midlothian Council said.

They add that enhanced cleaning and appropriate infection control measures were already in place.
