Covid in Scotland: Government 'looking carefully' at introducing jab incentive scheme

Scots could be encouraged to get the coronavirus vaccine through an incentive scheme, it has been revealed.

It's believed the Scottish Government is looking at introducing a scheme like seen in other countries across the world in a bid to get more people jabbed.

Take-up of the covid vaccine in Scotland is relatively high compared to some countries around the world who have been using some creative ways to encourage hesitant people.

Incentives to people in other nations include a ticket to win one-bedroom apartment worth $1.39m in Hong Kong, in the Philippines famers can win a cow if they get inoculated while in India people get 20 per cent off McDonald's if they get their covid jab.

Just this month the British Government signed agreements with Deliveroo and Uber to offer money off to people.

Now, it looks as if the Scottish Government is looking at doing something similar, the P&J reports.

In Scotland, over 90 per cent of adults have received at least one dose of the jab, while around 75 per cent have had both.

In the 60 to 79 age range 100 per cent of people have had their first jab with 98 per cent having both.

There has been hesitancy in the lower age groups with 73 per cent of 18 to 29-year-olds being jabbed once. There are currently 28 per cent of that particular age range double jabbed.

Speaking at the end of last month the First Minster Nicola Sturgeon said: "Compared to any previous vaccination programme undertaken in this country - and indeed compared even to our own expectations at the start of the Covid vaccine programme - these are already quite extraordinary uptake figures.

"And they do show how successful the vaccination programme has been so far.

"There is lots there for us to be positive about, but as with all aspects of this virus we’re not complacent. We want to see as close to 100% of the eligible population vaccinated as we can get."

A Scottish Government spokeswoman told the P&J: "The vaccination programme has been one of the fastest in the world with 90% of the adult population having received their first dose – far beyond our planning assumption of 80% – and so far 75% have received their second dose.

"We are always keen to explore ways to increase the vaccination rate and are looking carefully at appropriate incentives schemes to achieve this aim."
