Covid in Scotland: 71 deaths in past 24 hours as cases rise by 1,165

71 new coronavirus deaths have been registered in Scotland in the past 24 hours, bringing the country's death toll for people with a positive test to 5,376.

The new statistics published by the Scottish Government also confirm that 1,165 new cases have been recorded overnight, bringing the total positive tests to 164,927.

Of these, 354 were in Greater Glasgow and Clyde, and 178 in Lanarkshire.

The number of hospital admissions have also continued to rise dramatically, with 1,989 people currently in hospital - 30 more than yesterday. Of these, 150 are in intensive care. Hospital admissions for people being treated for coronavirus are now significantly higher than the previous peak of 1,520 in April last year.

Public Health Scotland said 284,582 people have received the first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine by 8.30am on Tuesday January 19, an increase of 19,591 from the previous day.

It added that 3,886 people have received the second dose, an increase of 188.
