Covid in Bristol: Number of patients in hospital with virus rises by 25 per cent in a week

The number of people in hospital with coronavirus has risen by 25 per cent in the space of a week, according to the latest data from the council. There are now 43 people in the local hospitals who have tested positive with the virus, compared to 34 a week ago.

However, the data also shows that the number of people in ICU (intensive care) with covid has stayed the same - two. Similarly, the latest covid report from Bristol City Council shows that 1 in 63 Bristol residents are estimated to have had the virus in the last week - which is 1.58 per cent of people in the city.

That is a small increase from last week, when the data showed it was one in 65. A total of four people have died with covid in Bristol in the last four weeks, which is two per cent of all deaths recorded in the period.

The council said in its report: "It is estimated that 1.6 per cent of people in Bristol, BANES and North Somerset have had COVID-19 in the past week, the same as the estimated national average in England which is 1.6 per cent.

"The number of people in hospital with COVID-19 has increased to 43 people from 34 last week. The number of patients in intensive care are at less than five."

It added: "Vaccination against coronavirus is the best way to protect against serious illness from the virus. The data shows that COVID-19 has not gone away.

"It's never too late to get your vaccine, whether it's your first, second, booster or spring booster dose. The impact of COVID-19 has affected people in different ways.

"Not only from the symptoms of having the virus, but also the mental and emotional strain of isolation. Regular exercise outdoors is a great way to look after our mental and physical wellbeing as well as reducing the spread of COVID-19. Help is also available on the NHS website."

Earlier this month, figures showed that fewer than 60 per cent of people aged over 12 in Bristol have received the covid booster jab, according to the latest government data. That is below the UK average of 69.1 per cent.
