More than 90 per cent of England's towns and cities have seen a rise in Covid cases, as the country braces itself for Freedom Day on Monday.
Data from Public Health England reveals that 288 of the country's 315 local authority areas recorded more infections in the week to Sunday than they did in the previous seven days.
Middlesbrough, Redcar & Cleveland, South Tyneside, Allerdale and Hartlepool are among the areas to see cases jump dramatically.
Just 27 places saw a fall in people testing positive, the figures show.
It comes amid grim warnings that new restrictions could be brought back in just weeks as infections rise.

There were 3,933 hospital admissions with the virus in a week across the UK - a 46.8 per cent rise in seven days.
Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty sounded the alarm over a potential "scary" growth in hospitalisations which could leave the NHS "in trouble again surprisingly fast" once restrictions are lifted.
The top medic said if hospital admissions begin doubling and the jabs rollout was not "topping out" the pandemic, in "five, six, seven eight weeks' time" the Prime Minister may need to "look again" at restrictions.
It comes after Mr Johnson insisted Brits must "learn to live with Covid" and ignored calls to keep the legal requirement for face masks in enclosed spaces beyond Sunday.
Speaking at a British Science Museum event, Professor Whitty underlined that epidemics are "either doubling or they're halving", adding: "And currently this epidemic is doubling. It's doubling in cases. It is also doubling in people going to hospital, and it's doubling in deaths."

South Tyneside has the highest infection rate in the country, with 2,077 new cases in the seven days to July 11 - the equivalent of 1,375.7 per 100,000 people.
This is up from 937.9 in the seven days to July 4.
Hartlepool has the second highest rate, up from 566.9 to 990.8, with 928 new cases.
Sunderland has the third highest rate, up from 747.2 to 967.2, with 2,686 new cases.
The five areas with the biggest week-on-week rises are:
- Middlesbrough (up from 454.0 to 961.8)
- Redcar & Cleveland (468.1 to 923.8)
- South Tyneside (937.9 to 1,375.7)
- Allerdale (171.8 to 596.4)
- Hartlepool (566.9 to 990.8)

Yesterday 48,553 Covid cases were confirmed by the Department of Health, while the number of people in hospital with the virus stood at 3,786 on Wednesday.
Prof Whitty said that the doubling time for hospital cases was "around three weeks" and while the number of hospitalisations was "mercifully much lower", it was "not trivial".
