Covid heat map shows surge of people with coronavirus symptoms in Bristol

Bristol’s active coronavirus cases are estimated to have risen by more than 450 in just five days.

The Covid Symptom Study is an app which tracks people with symptoms across the country, and gives an estimate for the number of people with the virus on a given day.

Its data, from King's College London, indicates Bristol has jumped from 1,232 symptomatic cases on October 9, to 1,688 today (October 14).

The suggested rise of 456 active cases is based on the app's latest estimate of 3,671 active cases per million people in Bristol – up from 2,659 per million.

It marks a huge surge in just over five weeks – on September 7, Bristol was estimated to have only 431 active cases in total.

In the last week, there have been 403 new confirmed cases among University of Bristol students.

And in that time, Public Health England says there have been 526 new cases in Bristol – meaning students could account for around three quarters of the total.

In Bath and North Somerset (B&NES), the King’s College team believes there to be 659 active cases – up from just 125 on September 7, the last time the region’s figure was reported.

B&NES is estimated to have almost as high an active case rate as Bristol, but numbers are more stable in the other surrounding areas, according to the data map.

North Somerset has seen an increase from 436 to 465 estimated active cases since October 9, while South Gloucestershire’s figure has gone from 570 to 546.

Here is each area’s rate of estimated active cases per million, as of October 14:

Bristol: 3,671

B&NES: 3,466

North Somerset: 2,199

South Gloucestershire: 1,949.

People across the country are using the app to report their health. The study also uses data from swab tests.

It indicates 335,943 people in the UK currently have symptomatic Covid-19.

Bristol’s data is based on reports from 11,999 people, South Gloucestershire’s from 5,971, North Somerset’s from 5,584 and B&NES’ from 3,466.

The Government’s daily update confirmed 152 new cases in Bristol yesterday (October 13), 43 in B&NES, 38 in South Gloucestershire and 28 in North Somerset.
