Covid ‘freedom pass’ app could be used as proof of jab, antibodies or negative test'

A smartphone app could be the key for anyone wanting to gain entry into UK venues such as pubs and sports stadium once restrictions are lifted.

The NHS app would allow Brits to show whether they've had coronavirus, been vaccinated or have tested negative, according to reports.

Those have had the virus could also show proof of their immunity from the bug even if they have not been vaccinated, The Sun claims.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Wednesday evidence of antibodies in the blood could be enough to qualify for certificates which will allow you into pubs, restaurants, cinemas, stadiums and theatres.

This comes after drinkers were told pubs could use vaccine passports to turn away un-jabbed customers.

But the Government has stressed no decisions on any such schemes have been taken yet.

The government's review into how the vaccine passports will work will be published early next month but current plans are said to be looking at using the NHS app as a digital 'freedom pass'.

If the plans go ahead there will be a paper version available for Brits without a smartphone.

The scheme is expected to not be mandatory but business that adopt it may be rewarded by being allowed to relax social distancing in their premises thus admit more people.

Mr Johnson said on Wednesday the review into how Covid certificates could work will be published in around 10 days’ time.

However he vowed the reopening of beer gardens on April 12 will still happen no matter what the findings of the review are.

He said: "No decisions have been taken at all. One thing I will make clear is none of this is obviously going to apply on April 12 when it will all be outdoors anyway."

Boris suggested the vaccine passports might only be possible to introduce after all adults had been offered a jab at the end of July.

He said: “The libertarian in me is also trying to protect people’s fundamental right to life and their ability to live their lives normally.

“And the only way really to restore that for everybody is for us to beat the disease and the best path to freedom is down the cautious but irreversible road map that we’ve set out — that’s what the freedom-lover wants.”

But the scheme may be slammed by civil liberties campaigners, some Tory MPs and many businesses.

Clive Watson, founder of City Pub Group, said introducing mandatory vaccines to pubs would be "absolutely chaotic and discriminatory".

He said: "If you can't require all hauliers coming into the country to have vaccine passports it is mad to suggest someone might need one to go to the pub.

"It's discriminatory and a lot of people, including myself, have had a vaccine but haven't got a way to immediately prove it.

"The paperwork would be an absolute nightmare."

Shadow Business Secretary Ed Miliband said Labour was open to looking at the proposals but said it was unfortunate they had been "revealed on the hoof".

He said: “The hospitality industry is due to open up again in two weeks, outdoors.

"Suddenly the PM comes along, out of the blue to say here’s a new responsibility you have to deal with without much clarity.”

Dan Shears, national officer of the GMB union, said: "If a vaccine certificate is the only way to access a pub, then most under-50s are essentially barred until they get their jab.

"This will lead to pressure on GPs to fast-track younger patients, false certificates, potential violence for pub workers and even a black market for vaccine doses."

A spokesman for the Department of Health told the Mirror they are sticking to the Government's roadmap review and 'can't give any specifications'.
