Covid effect: Mumbai's practice tie vs Bengal called off

MUMBAI: A plethora of covid cases in Bengal's team has hurt Mumbai's preparations for the forthcoming Ranji Trophy too.

On Monday, the Prithvi Shaw-led Mumbai team arrived in Kolkata with an eye to play two warm-up games there before they play their opener against Maharashtra in the Ranji Trophy from January 13, but TOI has learnt that the side's first practice game- a 90 overs-a-side game against hosts Bengal scheduled for Tuesday -was cancelled due to six players and a member of the support staff being struck by Covid-19.

"It's still not clear if the second game, also scheduled against Bengal on Wednesday, will be held or not," a source in the Mumbai Cricket Association told TOI.

On Sunday night, news merged that six Bengal cricketers - Sudip Chatterjee, Anustup Majumdar, Kazi Junaid Saifi, Geet Puri, Pradipta Pramanik, Surajit Yadav - and assistant coach Sourasish Lahiri have contracted the virus and are currently in isolation.

On the same day, Mumbai allrounder Shivam Dube and the side's video analyst Ganesh Tyagi tested positive on Sunday, a day before the side departed for Kolkata for the Ranji Trophy.
