Covid deaths reach 201 as UK reports fall in new infections

The UK faced another deadly day as 201 deaths were recorded on Wednesday.

Separate figures published by the Office for National Statistics show there have now been 159,000 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

There were 30,597 new infections of coronavirus reported in the UK.

Infections have been dropping as there was a fall of 18 per cent week-on-week.

Over the past week, the UK has reported 222,405 cases - a drop of 50,070 from the previous week.

It comes as NHS England told GPs it expects to start the vaccination programme in schools ‘no later than’ the 22 September “with the majority of school visits completed and vaccinations administered before October half term”.

However, a letter revealed in GP Online, acknowledged the tight time frames involved could mean that some school visits will not take place until after the break.

The letter also revealed PCN vaccination sites could be part of follow-up vaccination plans for any children that turn 12 after the school visit and those who were absent on the day of vaccinations, within 28 days of a positive COVID result, or take longer to decide to take up the vaccination offer.
