The government reported 101 further coronavirus deaths on Friday taking the UK total up to 126,026.

It is the lowest daily increase recorded on a Friday since October 9, when deaths started to rise at the beginning of the second wave.

Over the past week, deaths decreased 36.8 per cent over the previous week.

Five of these deaths were recorded in London. Last Friday saw 175 deaths reported.

They also reported 4,802 new people had a confirmed positive test result a decrease from last Friday’s figure of 6,609.

It came as the UK’s R number has increased slightly to between 0.6 and 0.9, according to the latest official data.

This week’s reproduction number has changed slightly from last week’s, which scientists estimated was between 0.6 and 0.8.

The current figure means that, on average, every 10 people will infect between six and nine other people.

Boris Johnson is to receive his first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine on Friday with 660,276 administered today.

26,273,732 people have now received their first dose.

Countries including France, Germany and Italy have started to roll out the AstraZeneca jab once again– reversing an earlier decision to suspend it over blood clot concerns.
