The Liverpool City Region suffered just eight deaths from Covid-19 in the second full week of April, new figures have shown.
Although a slight increase on the previous week, the eight deaths recorded in the week up to April 16 are just a fraction of the number seen at the end of January when weekly deaths peaked at 301.
Halton and Wirral both recorded no deaths from Covid-19 during the week while Liverpool recorded three, more than any other borough.
St Helens and Sefton both recorded two deaths, meaning Sefton’s death toll for the crisis has now risen past 900 fatalities.
As a proportion of its population, Sefton has suffered the most with almost one in every 300 people dying of the virus since the pandemic arrived in Merseyside last year.
As a whole, the city region has recorded 4,588 deaths over the course of the pandemic, some 1,621 of them occurring this year alone.
The number of deaths recorded in the week up to April 16 in each borough appears below, along with the total death toll for the whole crisis in brackets.

The plateauing of weekly deaths in the city region reflects the plateauing of cases since the start of April as lockdown restrictions eased and people began to mix more.
But as the vaccine continues to be delivered to more and more people in the city region, deaths should begin to fall again.
