Covid deaths have fallen by more than 98 per cent

Deaths involving Covid-19 coronavirus among people in all age groups 60 and over have fallen by at least 98% since the second-wave peak, the latest ONS figures suggest.

A total of 61 Covid-19 deaths in the 80-and-over age group occurred in England and Wales in the week ending April 30, down from 5,373 deaths in the week ending January 22 – a drop of 99%.

Deaths for those aged 75-79 also fell 99% in the same period, with drops of 98% for those aged 70-74, 65-69 and 60-64. Deaths that occurred in the most recent week of reporting – the week to May 7 – are still being registered.

A total of 152,919 deaths have now occurred in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate, the ONS said.

The highest number of deaths to occur on a single day was 1,477 on January 19.

During the first wave of the virus, the daily death toll peaked at 1,461 deaths on April 8 2020.

Some 15 care home resident deaths involving Covid-19 in England and Wales were registered in the week to May 7, down 57% on the previous week.

In total, 42,431 care home residents in England and Wales have had Covid-19 recorded on their death certificate since the pandemic began.

The ONS figures cover deaths of care home residents in all settings, not just in care homes.

A total of 129 deaths registered in England and Wales in the week ending May 7 mentioned Covid-19 on the death certificate, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) – the lowest number since the week ending September 11 2020.

The figure is down 37% on the previous week, although the ONS said the number of deaths registered was affected by the bank holiday on May 3.

Around one in 63 (1.6%) deaths registered in England and Wales in the week to May 7 mentioned Covid-19 on the death certificate.
