Covid deaths halve in Liverpool City Region to lowest level for six months

Deaths from Covid-19 in the Liverpool City Region reached their lowest level for six months in the third week of March, new figures have shown.

Covid-19 deaths fell by more than 50% in the week up to March 19, according to figures from the Office for National Statistics, with just 17 recorded during the week.

This took the total death toll for the pandemic to 4,530 - just under a quarter of all deaths since the beginning of the crisis a year ago and one death for every 344 residents of the city region.

The figures released by the ONS on Tuesday (March 30) include all deaths where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate. This means the virus was either the primary cause of death or a contributing factor.

Most boroughs saw a significant fall in deaths from the virus during the week up to March 19, but Halton saw its weekly death toll rise slightly from two to five. This took the borough’s total death toll to the crisis to 300 people.

In Knowsley, the weekly death toll remained steady at just two deaths.

The number of deaths for each borough during the third week of March is shown below, along with the boroughs’ total death tolls for the whole crisis.

Halton - 5 (300)

Knowsley - 2 (430)

Liverpool - 4 (1,399)

St Helens - 2 (535)

Sefton - 2 (885)

Wirral - 2 (981)

With cases of Covid-19 either falling or plateauing across the region and the number of Covid patients in hospital still declining, the city region’s death toll is likely to continue falling in the coming weeks.

Progress on rolling out the vaccine is also likely to reduce the number of Covid deaths. Around 700,000 people in the city region have already received at least one dose of the vaccine, equivalent to more than half the adult population.
