Covid deaths drop 25% but cases remain high

Covid cases have dropped by over 6% in the past seven days, with deaths falling by 25% compared to the same 24-hour period last week.

Figures released by the Department of Health on Sunday revealed that the UK has seen 30,439 people test positive for Coronavirus, and 43 virus-related deaths.

Last week there were 32,417 cases and 58 deaths from Covid, meaning the seven-day average of covid deaths has decreased by 19% with 785 fatalities recorded in the past week.

Further encouraging news from the Department of Health shows that Covid hospitalisations due to Covid have fallen by 10.3 per cent in one week, with 5,064 in the past seven days.

Despite the lowering hospital admissions and deaths, daily case numbers have remained above 30k for the 14 th day in the row, with the faster-spreading delta variant continuing to hit Brits.

The figures come as medical experts continue to encourage young people to get their vaccines to help push case numbers further down.

In Liverpool, 62.6% of people have aged 16+ have received both jabs, a total of 289,228 people.

The independent group SAGE’s Dr Helen Salisbury of Oxford University joined the voices advising everyone eligible for the jab to get it, saying: “I urge children to get vaccinated.”

The National Education Union says one in 22 youngsters had Covid last week-with rates for 10-14-year-olds current at 1,500 in 100,000.

Liverpool has seen 1,359 positive tests in the past seven days and 4 deaths, a drop of nearly 43% on the previous week.

The R value-which measures the speed at which the virus is being spread in the North West is currently estimated to be between 0.8-1.1.
