Covid deaths decline across city region for fourth week in a row

Deaths from Covid-19 declined again for the third week running in the middle of February as the city region continued to suppress the virus.

The Liverpool City Region recorded 106 deaths from the virus in the week up to February 19, according to figures from the Office for National Statistics released on Tuesday (March 2).

The figures showed deaths falling in every borough of the city region, reaching their lowest level for a month.

Deaths in St Helens, Sefton and Wirral all halved during the week, while deaths in Halton fell almost 75% compared to the previous week, underlining the progress being made in fighting the virus.

The figures released on Tuesday include all deaths where Covid-19 was recorded on the death certificate, meaning it was either the primary cause of death or a contributing factor.

While deaths fell overall, however, Sefton’s care homes recorded eight Covid deaths. Over the past five weeks, deaths in the borough’s care homes have remained fairly constant, averaging around nine per week.

Meanwhile, Liverpool and Knowsley showed only small decreases in the number of Covid deaths during the week.

The figures released on Tuesday brought the city region’s total Covid death toll for 2021 to 1,336 - the equivalent of two in every five deaths this year.

Since the crisis began, there have been 4,303 deaths from Covid-19 in the city region.

The number of Covid deaths in each borough during the week up to February 19 are shown below, with the total death toll for the pandemic given in brackets.

Halton - 4 (285)

Knowsley - 15 (397)

Liverpool - 31 (1,345)

St Helens - 15 (494)

Sefton - 22 (841)

Wirral - 19 (941)

With cases of the virus still falling across the city region and nearly a third of the population now vaccinated, deaths are likely to continue declining over the coming weeks.
