Covid closes second Ayr primary school as authorities bid to shut down spread of virus

A second Ayr primary school has been closed this afternoon in a bid to stop the spread of Covid in the town.

Pupils and staff at Braehead Primary have been told to stay at home from close of play today.

The school will not reopen until Monday, March 22, South Ayrshire Council has confirmed.

Ayrshire Live revealed earlier this afternoon that Heathfield Primary was also shutting its doors on a temporary basis.

A statement from the council read: "In order to avoid further spread of the virus, we have taken the decision to close Braehead and Heathfield Primary Schools temporarily.

"The schools will close fully (including for child care purposes) from the end of today until Monday, March 22, 2021.

"Pupils from both primary schools will learn remotely for the duration of the closures.

"Schools will be in contact with parents/carers about arrangements.

"We know that this will be disappointing for many families, however, our priority is to keep everyone safe."
