Covid cases up in two-thirds of England as Indian variant surges - see list of hotspots

Coronavirus rates are now spiking in more than two-thirds of England as Blackburn overtakes Bolton as the top virus hotspot, new figures show.

Infection rates are on the rise in 217 areas - or 69% of the country - as the Indian variant eclipses the mutation that first emerged in Kent to become the UK's dominant strain.

Many areas recording rises have fewer than ten cases to begin with, and some - such as the North Yorkshire district of Ryedale, have recorded no cases at all in weeks.

But Indian variant hotspot Lancashire continues to record growing infections rates, with the county's towns now dominating cases tables.

Infection rates remain high in Bolton, Greater Manchester, but its numbers are showing promising signs of reversal after weeks of surge testing and concentrated vaccination efforts.

Authorities are racing to contain the spread of the strain as case numbers soared again today to the highest levels recorded in three months, despite the vaccine first doses reaching nearly 40million - or three-quarters of the UK's adult population.

It comes as the government cracked down on travel, axing Portugal from the UK's green list and moving seven more countries on to the red list.

Ministers cited the threat of new variants spreading in their decision-making, saying the priority was 'safety first' to ensure the planned June 21 unlocking of restrictions can go ahead.

A total 6,238 new cases were reported on Friday - nearly doubling since the same time last week and marking the highest daily infection number recorded since mid-March.

The UK's 'R' rate rose to between 1 and 1.2 on Friday, meaning that, on average, every 10 people infected will infect between 10 to 12 other people.

Public Health England (PHE) figures showed this week that the North West of England is recording the highest numbers of new cases.

Friday's figures show area of Greater Manchester and Lancashire continue to record the highest infection rates, as surge testers race to contain Indian variant hotspots around England.

Of the 315 local areas in England, 217 (69%) have seen a rise in rates, 88 (28%) have seen a fall and 10 are unchanged.

Blackburn with Darwen in Lancashire continues to have the highest rate, with 661 new cases in the seven days to May 31, the equivalent of 441.6 cases per 100,000 people.

This is up from 356.7 in the seven days to May 24.

Bolton in Greater Manchester has the second highest rate, down from 404.5 to 366.2, with 1,053 new cases.

Rossendale in Lancashire has the third highest, up from 212.6 to 296.6, with 212 new cases.

The five areas with the biggest week-on-week rises are:

Hyndburn, Lancashire (up from 101.2 to 211.0)

Ribble Valley, Lancashire (60.8 to 159.3)

South Ribble, Lancashire (45.1 to 132.7)

Blackburn with Darwen, Lancashire (356.7 to 441.6)

Rossendale, Lancashire (212.6 to 296.6)

The figures, for the seven days to May 31, are based on the number of people who have tested positive for Covid-19 in either a lab-reported or rapid lateral flow test, by specimen date.

The rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people.

Data for the most recent four days (June 1-4) has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.

The list has been calculated by the PA news agency based on Public Health England data published on June 4 on the Government's coronavirus dashboard.
