Covid cases unchanged for second week running in Sefton

Cases of Covid-19 remained steady in Sefton once again last week following the reopening of non-essential shops.

In the week up to April 20, Sefton saw 54 new cases of Covid-19 compared to 52 the week before.

This very slight rise is unlikely to indicate that the virus is spreading more but rather that cases have reached a plateau in the last two weeks as lockdown restrictions eased.

Sefton’s infection rate is still relatively low at 19.5 cases per 100,000 people, but this is still well above the levels seen last summer after the first lockdown.

Even with the pubs and shops reopening, members of the public should keep following the rules to prevent a sudden increase in infections.

Local public health chiefs will also hope that the continuing vaccination programme will help reduce the spread of the disease and keep the number of deaths from Covid-19 low.

Sefton itself has not seen a Covid-19 death since April 12, and the city region as a whole recorded an entire week without a Covid death during the seven days up to April 19.

The borough also continues to have one of the highest vaccination levels on Merseyside, with 56% of the total population and more than two-thirds of adults having received at least one jab.

Only St Helens has a slightly higher vaccination rate, with 56.2% of people having been vaccinated.

In the region as a whole, almost 800,000 people have received at least one dose of the vaccine, equivalent to 51% of the population.
