Covid cases start to fall in parts the North East - see the rates where you live

Covid rates are falling in much of the North East after a large spike across the region.

New Government figures, published on Tuesday, reveal infection rates are dropping in four of the seven key council areas.

It emerged on Monday that cases were down week-on-week in Newcastle and South Tyneside.

Now Gateshead and North Tyneside are also seeing a decline in new infections.

However, overall, the North East is still one of the worst hit parts of England. Last week, over 16,000 people tested positive.

And nationally, 96 further Covid deaths were announced on Monday - the highest daily figure since March.

That grim figure comes just 24 hours after all remaining restrictions - such as face masks and social distancing - were lifted.

Yet while cases are still rising in parts of our region, the spread has slowed significantly.
