Covid cases soar across Bristol region as another death confirmed

The number of coronavirus cases in the Bristol region has surged by 50 per cent within the latest 48 hours, government data shows.

On Wednesday, 548 new cases were confirmed across the region, but two days later on Friday, September 3, this number has risen to 824.

The majority were in Bristol, with 356 new positive tests confirmed in the last 24 hours.

Figures show there are currently 99 Covid patients being cared for in Bristol's hospitals, and 13 people battling on ventilators.

South Gloucestershire recorded the second-highest figure of 198. North Somerset followed with 140 cases.

Bath and North East Somerset recorded the fewest number of daily cases with 130.

Across the region, a total of 117,542 cases have now been recorded since the start of the pandemic.

One new death within 28 days of a positive test was also recorded in the region in Bath and North East Somerset.

The total number of cases confirmed in each region around Bristol, with the daily rise in brackets, are as follows:

  • City of Bristol - 55,632 (+356)

  • North Somerset - 17,698 (+140)

  • South Gloucestershire - 28,039 (+198)

  • Bath and North East Somerset - 16,173 (+130)

The total number of deaths recorded in each region, with any increase in brackets, is as follows:

  • City of Bristol - 507 (-)

  • North Somerset - 323 (-)

  • South Gloucestershire - 366 (-)

  • Bath and North East Somerset - 233 (+1)

Across the entirety of the UK, a total of 42,076 new cases were recorded bringing the total to 6,904,969 positive tests since the beginning of the pandemic.

A further 121 people died within 28 days of a positive coronavirus test in the UK in the last 24 hours as well.

This brings the total number of deaths in the UK to 133,041.
