Covid cases have risen in 147 areas across the UK as daily deaths resulting from the virus have spiked to the highest figure we’ve seen in nearly six months.
New data shows that virus cases have today risen by 35,693 with a further 207 deaths, the highest figure since March, recorded in the last 24 hours.
Meanwhile, today’s update of Covid-19 case rates for every local authority area in the UK show 147, or 39 per cent of the country, have seen a week-on-week rise in rates.
Another 225 areas, or 60 per cent, have seen a fall, and five are unchanged.

The five UK areas with the biggest week-on-week rises are:
- North Lanarkshire (up from 489.8 to 1,229.4)
- East Dunbartonshire (580.2 to 1,231.3)
- Inverclyde (473.7 to 1,112.1)
- Renfrewshire (511.7 to 1,017.9)
- South Lanarkshire (496.9 to 988.1)
The highest rates are all in Scotland, with East Dunbartonshire recording the highest rate.
The region has seen 339 new cases in the seven days to August 28 - the equivalent of 1,231.3 per 100,000 people.
This is up sharply from 580.2 in the seven days to August 21.
North Lanarkshire has the second highest rate, up from 489.8 to 1,229.4, with 4,194 new cases.
West Dunbartonshire has the third highest rate, up from 704.1 to 1,143.3, with 1,010 new cases.
Fermanagh & Omagh has the highest rate in Northern Ireland (1,011.6), Swansea has the highest rate in Wales (664.3) and Mansfield has the highest rate in England (560.6).
The most dramatic rises in the number of cases have occurred in North Lanarkshire, East Dunbartonshire, Inverclyde, Renfrewshire and South Lanarkshire.

The figures, compiled by the PA news agency, data published on September 1 on the Government's coronavirus dashboard, are for the seven days to August 28.
They are based on the number of people who have tested positive for Covid-19 in either a lab-reported or rapid lateral flow test, by specimen date.
The rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people.
Data for the most recent four days (August 29-September 1) has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.
The 207 Covid-19 deaths recorded today represents the highest number of fatalities since March 9, when there was 231.
Last Wednesday there were 35,847 more infections and 149 fatalities within 28 days of a positive test.
It's a slight drop in cases over the course of a week, but a surge in deaths by 39 percent.
The UK has seen at least 20,000 daily cases since the end of June.
And in that period, infections peaked at 54,674 on July 17 - two days before England lifted restrictions.
On Monday the number of daily Covid infections did, however, drop below 30,000 for the first time in nearly two weeks.
Yesterday saw 32,181 new cases recorded and 50 more deaths.
Throughout March, when the UK was in lockdown, cases rarely reached above 6,000 but daily death rates were similar to August despite last month often seeing around 35,000 new cases a day.
Nearly 7,000 people were being treated for the virus last week, the latest Department of Health data shows.
NHS trusts in Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester had England's highest numbers of coronavirus patients, while all of the country's 10 worst hit hospitals have seen a dramatic rise in cases since Freedom Day.
The vaccination programme, however, continues to rumble on.
The UK administered 19,643 first doses of the vaccination, and 66,648 second jabs, as of Monday (August 30).
The number of fully vaccinated Brits now sits at 42,790,585, as per the most up to date figures.
Although infections did not rise as expected when lockdown restrictions were lifted last month, scientists have continued to warn that the UK should brace for a difficult autumn.
