Covid cases in Scotland rise by 40% in past week as Nicola Sturgeon issues warning

Nicola Sturgeon has announced that the cases of coronavirus in Scotland have jumped by 40 per cent over the last week.

The First Minister gave an update on the latest situation regarding the covid pandemic across the country to MSPs in the Scottish Parliament.

During the SNP leader's statement in the chamber she warned against any complacency agains the virus despite the high levels of people being vaccinated.

Over the last 24-hour period, 2,167 positive cases were reported in Scotland which is a positivity rate of 9.1 per cent.

Since the start of the pandemic there have been 257,742 Scots who have tested positve.

There are 171 people are currently in hospital – 12 more than yesterday.

18 Scots are in intensive care, which is three more than yesterday.

Four people sadly passed away in the last 24 hours after contracting the virus..

The total number of deaths is now 7,696.

Sturgeon said: "The number of new cases recorded over the past week has increased by almost 40% on the week before.

"That total is seven times higher than in early May, and higher than at any point since late January.

"This reflects the fact that the faster transmitting Delta variant is now dominant."
