Covid cases in Northumberland quadruple in just a week as new hotspots emerge

Newcastle has leapfrogged North Tyneside to become the North East's main Covid hotspot.

However, there's been a worrying upswing in Northumberland's infection rate, with cases rising by over 300% in just one week.

With little over a week until all restrictions are possibly lifted., cases are now more than doubling or even trebling by the week across the country.

And with Newcastle's infection rate outpacing North Tyneside, the city has now nudged ahead of its neighbour to become the worst hit of the region's 12 councils.

For weeks, North Tyneside's infection rate had remained well above the rest of the North East as the area struggled to contain the spread of the fast-spreading delta strain.

However, new Government figures suggests that may be starting to slow. While cases in the area were recently doubling week-on-week, they only increased by 12.4% last week - comfortably the smallest growth in the North East.

That has meant Newcastle has overtaken it. Analysis of the UK Government's interactive Covid map suggests many of the outbreaks pushing up the city's rate are currently in traditionally student-heavy areas, such as Jesmond, Heaton and Shieldfield.

In Jesmond alone, cases were up 400% last week and while the West End is also a hotspot, there was only one extra case in Elswick last week while Scotswood's rate remained the same.

And the situation is definitely worse north of the River Tyne. Of the councils south of the water, only Gateshead has an overall infection rate higher than 50 - while all three councils north of the river exceeded that figure.

They now include Northumberland, which given that much of it is rural, has managed for weeks in keeping levels low.

However, over the last week, cases have rocketed. Outbreaks are dotted across the huge region, with infections up 350% in Rothbury and 500% in Amble, Shilbottle and Swarland.

The area driving up the county the fastest is Ashington. In the west of the town, cases are up a whopping 850%.
