COVID cases halve in a week in Perth and Kinross but deaths reach five-month high

The number of COVID cases in Perth and Kinross more than halved last week, according to data from Public Health Scotland.

However, a further four people in the region died from the coronavirus according to the National Records of Scotland.

It is the highest weekly death figure since late February and brings the total number of death certificates in the region that mention COVID-19 to 266 since the crisis began last year.

Despite that, hopes will be high that deaths may have reached their peak this time around with case numbers continuing to tumble.

The seven-day infection rate in Perth and Kinross dropped to its lowest level since early June.

As of July 25, the rate was 133.6 per 100,000, the lowest since June 7. Early data suggests it may even have dropped below 100 for the first time since June 5.

In the week up to and including July 25, 203 positive tests were recorded in the region - a drop from 421 the week before.

Crucially, the region is set to go below the five per cent positive test barrier set by the World Health Organisation which suggests the pandemic is under control.

No neighbourhoods in the region have infection rates of above 400 per 100,000. The highest infection rate is at Moncrieffe and Friarton where the rate is 319.5 after 13 positive tests.

Eight neighbourhoods are recording an infection rate so low that the virus is considering to be suppressed for now.
