Covid cases forced Swansea Central Police Station’s custody suite to shut

Police were forced to close a city centre police station’s custody suite after suspected positive Covid infections over the weekend.

People being held in custody at Swansea Central Police Station needed to be taken to alternative facilities, believed to have been at Bridgend, while the premises underwent a deep clean.

It is not clear how many people were thought to have been infected, nor whether it included any officers.

South Wales Police say additional cleaning is often carried out in the light of the coronavirus pandemic.

A spokesman for the force said the temporary closure did not affect their ability to arrest and detain people.

He added: “The custody suite at Swansea Central Police Station was closed for a short time on Saturday, January 23, in order for a deep clean to be carried out.

“During this time, prisoners were taken to an alternative custody suite and our ability to arrest and detain individuals anywhere in the force area was not affected.

“Additional cleaning is often conducted where positive Covid cases are identified, or there has been an increase in symptomatic individuals being brought in to custody”.
