UK Covid cases have dropped by 18 per cent in the last week - the biggest weekly fall in the past year, according to new statistics.
There were 72,546 new daily symptomatic cases of the virus on average in the past week, a Zoe Covid App study based on PCR and lateral flows tests shows.
According to the analysis, which is based on data from up to five days ago, that is an 18 per cent drop on the 88,592 new daily cases recorded last week.
The UK R value is estimated to be around 0.9, and regional R values are; England, 0.9, Wales, 0.9, Scotland, 1.0.
An average of one in 58 people in the UK currently have symptomatic Covid, with England having a rate of one in 57, Wales one in 47 and Scotland one in 84.

Cases are the highest in the Midlands, South East and North East, although prevalence is falling in those areas, the data shows.
In the vaccinated population, among those with at least two doses, cases are dropping more slowly and it’s estimated there are currently 24,766 new daily symptomatic cases in the UK.
This is a decrease of 11.5% from 27,980 new daily cases last week.
There has been a steep decline in cases among 0 to 18-year-olds, while infections among 20 to 29-year-olds are still increasing.
Cases among 35 to 55-year-olds have been falling and they have been levelling off in those above 55.
