Covid cases around world as 'UK won’t be safe until everywhere is safe'

The coronavirus pandemic is still raging across the world, with dozens of countries struggling to suppress the deadly virus.

And the fight against Covid-19 will only end in the UK when it ends everywhere, The Mirror reports.

As we bid for freedom during summer, many countries face devastating new waves claiming thousands of lives.

Despite the vaccine roll-out in the UK, cases still remain high in Covid hotspots across pockets of the nation.

Professor Martin McKee, of London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said: "We won’t be safe until everyone is safe.

"More needs to be done to ensure every country gets enough jabs."

USA - AMBER

Infection rate: 347

After taking office with half a million Covid deaths, president Biden promised 200million vaccines in his first 100 days, with 2.2million shots going into American arms every day.

Vaccine rate: 50.45%

CANADA - AMBER

Infection rate: 451

Cases in Canada overtook the US in April, prompting a strict six-week stay at home order in Ontario and the ramping up of the vaccine programme.

Vaccine rate: 58.97%

MEXICO - AMBER

Infection rate: 160

Mexico has one of the worst Covid death rates, with over 227,800 fatalities, but has recently seen a drop in infections partly due to people travelling north to get their vaccines in the US.

Vaccine rate: 17.55%

TRINIDAD & TOBAGO - RED (from June 8)

Infection rate: 2,326

The Caribbean nation, which goes on the UK’s red list tomorrow, has seen infections surge and is now in a state of emergency with a 9pm curfew in place.

Vaccine rate: 7.42%

BRAZIL - RED

Infection rate: 2,078

In the past month alone 56,000 people have died of the virus in Brazil, with many blaming Covid-denying president Jair Bolsonaro for its over 468,000 deaths and slow vaccine rollout.

Vaccine rate: 21.88%

ARGENTINA - RED

Infection rate: 5,047

Argentina was this week forced to pull out of hosting the Copa America as Covid infections soar and world’s third highest number of deaths in the past week.

Vaccine rate: 21.96%

PERU -RED

Infection rate: 844

Peru this week revised its Cover death toll, almost tripling the number to almost 181,000, meaning the country has the worst pandemic death rate per capita.

Vaccine rate: 8.52%

CHILE - RED

Infection rate: 2,614

Chile was among the fastest countries to distribute the vaccine, but now faces a rise in cases with some believing people became too complacent about wearing masks and social distancing.

Vaccine rate: 56.59%

UNITED KINGDOM

Infection rate: 370

With three quarters of UK adults having received a first jab, we have one of the world’s most successful vaccination campaigns, but dithering at the beginning of the pandemic meant we also have one of the highest death rates.

Vaccine rate: 58.31%

GERMANY - AMBER

Infection rate: 368

With almost a fifth of adults fully vaccinated, Germany has seen a sharp decline in Covid infections and this week lowered its coronavirus risk level for the first time in 2021.

Vaccine rate: 45.10%

FRANCE - AMBER

Infection rate: 982

After a severe third wave of infections, President Macron this week opened up vaccines to all adults in a race against new variants, announcing that both he and wife Brigitte had had the jab.

Vaccine rate: 38.81%

HOLLAND - AMBER

Infection rate: 1,173

Although still one of the highest in Europe, Holland has seen a sharp fall in infections, recording on Thursday the lowest number of positive tests since September.

Vaccine rate: 38.60%

ITALY - AMBER

Infection rate: 354

Italy’s bars and restaurants reopened for indoor service this week as the country which was the first in Europe to be overwhelmed by coronavirus continues to ease restrictions.

Vaccine rate: 39.97%

SPAIN - AMBER

Infection rate: 639

Spain has set a target of vaccinating 70% of the population by the end of the summer. Until then, a traffic light system was introduced this week to determine coronavirus restrictions in different regions.

Vaccine rate: 39.41%

GREECE - AMBER

Infection rate: 1,007

With 18% of the Greek economy reliant on tourism, the country has embarked on an aggressive vaccination campaign to jab every resident of 80 of its islands.

Vaccine rate: 36%

UNITED ARAB EMIRATES - RED

Infection rate: 1,391

The UAE was the first country to vaccine children aged 12-15, and authorities announced this week that more than 81% of people over 16, and almost 93% of over-60s, had been inoculated.

Vaccine rate: 81.93%

ISRAEL - GREEN

Infection rate: 12

With new coronavirus cases now at below 20 a day, Israel this week removed restrictions on the size of gatherings and allowed access to restaurants and sports events to both vaccinated and non-vaccinated citizens.

Vaccine rate: 63%

NIGERIA - AMBER

Infection rate: 2

Nigeria kicked off its vaccination campaign in March, starting with healthcare workers. Although deaths have remained low, restrictions have increased poverty in the West African country.

Vaccine rate: 0.95%

SOUTH AFRICA - RED

Infection rate: 491

Researchers in South Africa believe more than half the population has been infected since the start of the pandemic, with the country’s highly-infectious strain identified in at least 20 other countries, including the UK.

Vaccine rate: 1.08%

RUSSIA - AMBER

Infection rate: 439

After developing its own vaccine, Sputnik V, Russia announced this month it had started vaccinating animals against coronavirus with the first animal-specific jab.

Vaccine rate: 11.65%

IRAN - AMBER

Infection rate: 819

One of the first countries outside China to be hit and now experiencing a brutal fourth wave, academics recently put Iran’s death toll at 418,000, over five times higher than the official figure.

Vaccine rate: 3.26%

INDIA - RED

Infection rate: 771

With a population of 1.3billion, even though India has administered more than 220million doses, still only 3% has been fully vaccinated. The country is still seeing over 100,000 daily Covid infections a day.

Vaccine rate: 12.45%

JAPAN - AMBER

Infection rate: 189

Japan insisted this week the Olympics would still go ahead, but with only 2.7% of its population fully vaccinated doctors have warned the event would strain its healthcare system.

Vaccine rate: 8.69%

THAILAND - AMBER

Infection rate: 394

Thailand reaped the rewards of shutting its borders at the start of the pandemic, but it is now struggling to contain a third wave of infections that spread from Bangkok in April.

Vaccine rate: 3.58%

PHILIPPINES - RED

Infection rate: 421

With the second-highest number of Covid cases and deaths in Southeast Asia, President Rodrigo Duterte this week extended Covid restrictions in the Philippines, with a ban on non-essential travel.

Vaccine rate: 3.63%

CHINA - AMBER

Infection rate: 0.1

With rigorous testing and 20million vaccinations a day, China has virtually eliminated transmission of the virus, with just one Covid fatality in the last 13 months.

Vaccine rate: 50.4%

NEW ZEALAND - GREEN

Infection rate: 2

Thanks to Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s swift actions at the start of the pandemic New Zealand vaccine rollout isn’t a race against time, but it is ahead of schedule with one in 20 Kiwis now fully inoculated.

Vaccine rate: 8.97%

AUSTRALIA - GREEN

Infection rate: 3

Amid a rise of infections, supply issues have meant that only 2% of Australians have been fully vaccinated and those under 40 still aren’t eligible.

Vaccine rate: 15.53%
