Covid capital of Scotland: One Ayrshire region has the highest case rate in the country

One Ayrshire region has the highest coronavirus case rate per 100,000 population in Scotland.

The latest data from the festive period shows that East Ayrshire has the worst infection rate in the country over the past seven days.

Public Health Scotland data up to Monday, December 28 shows that East Ayrshire has the highest case rate in the country with 193.4 cases per 100,000 with Renfrewshire on 188.2 and Dundee City on 184.8.

Neighbouring authorities in the North are on 154.4 with South Ayrshire on 101.2 – almost half of East Ayrshire's infection rate.

East Ayrshire's positivity rate is also one of the highest in the country with almost 10 per cent (9.7 per cent) of residents tested receiving a positive result for COVID-19.

In the last seven days East Ayrshire has recorded 236 cases.

The news comes days after mainland Scotland was plunged back into Tier 4 restrictions on Boxing Day.

The tough measures were implemented by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon following a relaxing of coronavirus rules on Christmas Day.
