A Wirral coronavirus testing bus was vandalised in a 'mindless attack' as it was parked on an Wirral estate.
The bus, that was delivering free rapid covid tests to residents on Beechwood Estate, had it's windows smashed in the 'mindless' attack.
After visiting Birkenhead today, on Thursday, May 13, the bus was set to visit Wallasey Town Hall to carry out testing and hand out symptom-free kits to the local community.
It was also due to visit The Green Hut, Leasowe, on Friday daytime however both planned trips have been cancelled because of the damage.
Leader of Wirral Council branded the attack 'shocking' and 'mindless' and said the police have been informed.
Councillor Janette Williamson said: "I was shocked when I was told one of our testing vehicles had been attacked today.
"This mindless act of violence is beyond comprehension. There was significant damage caused to the vehicle but thankfully no members of the public or staff were injured. The incident has been reported to Merseyside Police.
"The testing team is critical to our COVID-19 response. They are on the frontline, helping to keep residents safe and their personal safety should never be under threat."
The testing is part of a Government scheme that involves regular rapid virus testing for those without symptoms.
At the time of rolling out the key strategy, in April this year, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said: "Around one in three people have coronavirus without any symptoms, so getting tested regularly is one of the simplest and easiest ways we can keep ourselves and our loved ones safe.
"I’d encourage everyone to take up the offer and test twice a week.
“Alongside the successful rollout of the vaccination programme, rapid testing will be one of our most effective weapons in tackling this virus and ensuring we can cautiously reopen our economy and parts of society that we have all missed.
"The British people have made a tremendous effort throughout the pandemic and I am confident they will do the same now by taking up this offer of free, rapid tests."
