Covid booster Ireland: Who qualifies and what type of vaccine will be given?

Covid-19 booster shots have been given the go-ahead by the National Immunisation Advisory Committee (niac) and the advice will now be considered by CMO, Tony Holohan.

This news was confirmed at a meeting between Taoiseach Micheal Martin and Tanaiste, Leo Varadkar and Eamon Ryan last night.

But who will be getting the Covid-19 booster? And what type of vaccine is being offered?

Here's everything we know about the booster program.

Who is advised to get the booster shot?

People who are aged 60 and over will be allowed to get a booster shot. This also includes people 65 and over living in a long term care facility or nursing home

How will you get the booster shot?

If over 65 and living in a long term care facility, you will be vaccinated where you live. If over 80 and not living in long term facilities, you will be invited for your vaccine by your GP.

When will they start?

Speaking today, Taoiseach, Micheal Martin said that the booster shot campaign will start immediately.

Which vaccine will be offered?

Regardless of what type of vaccine you received initially, either Pfizer or Moderna will be offered to booster recipients.

What about the flu shot?

It is safe for people to get both the Covid-19 booster and the flu shot at the same time or any other vaccines a person may need.

Is it safe to get a booster?

Yes. A booster shot has been recommended NIAC as well as being approved by the European Medicines Agency.
