Covid: Assam imposes total curfew in five districts

GUWAHATI: The Assam government on Monday declared total containment in five districts of the state and imposed restrictions on observing Eid-Al-Adha in mosques and public places.

The new SOP published by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) stated that Eid has to be observed from homes whereas namaaz at mosques has been allowed with maximum five people, including the religious head.

On the other hand, round-the-clock curfew has been imposed in Golaghat, Jorhat, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur and Biswanath districts. The ASDMA has issued the directive for both rural and urban areas which will remain in force from 5 am of Tuesday until further orders.

“There will be total containment in five districts showing high positivity rate of late. In the districts showing moderate positivity rate — Goalpara and Morigaon districts — curfew will be from 1 pm to 5 am,” said health minister Keshab Mahanta in a news conference.

Mandatory screening of all passengers entering Assam

In rest of the 27 districts, he said, curfew will be from 5 pm to 5 am, even as these districts are showing improvement in positivity. Mahanta said Covid screening of all passengers entering Assam is mandatory. Even those arriving at Assam airports from other NE states will be tested.

All work places, business and commercial establishments, shops dealing with groceries, fruits and vegetables, dairy and milk booths, animal fodder, restaurants, dhabas amongst others will remain closed in districts showing high positivity rate. However, relaxation for the same up to 12 pm has been given in districts showing moderate positivity rate (Goalpara and Morigaon) and up to 4 pm in 27 districts showing improvement in positivity rate.

The ASDMA order stated that there will be a total ban on movement of all public and private transport in the total containment districts, which has been under round-the-clock curfew.

But movement of goods has been allowed in these five districts. In other districts, all public transport authorities have been asked to enforce Covid-appropriate behavior and proper seating arrangement inside the vehicles, carriers and containers. “All inter-district passenger transport services and movement of people to and from other districts shall remain suspended,” read the SOP.
