Vaccinations against COVID-19 for the elderly started on Monday in many municipalities.

In Oita City, mass inoculations began at three locations for about 70,000 residents age 75 or older. At Oita Children's Hospital, one of the three locations, about a dozen people waited in a queue before the reception desk opened at 9:30 a.m.

"Coronavirus infections are spreading even in the prefecture," said hospital director Tamotsu Fujimoto. "We plan to make preparations so that the elderly can be vaccinated on weekends and holidays, too."

Reservation services had to be temporarily suspended in many cases because call centers and websites set up by local governments were overwhelmed by people attempting to schedule vaccinations.

In response, both NTT East Corp. and NTT West Corp. placed restrictions on communications on Monday morning.
