COVID-19: Tripura shuts educational institutions, cinema halls till Mar. 31

The Tripura government on Monday announced the closure of all educational institutions in an attempt to stem the spread of COVID-19. Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced the decision at a press conference. He said the closure would remain effective from March 17 to 31.

Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar said later that cinema halls, gymnasiums and swimming pools would also be closed. “Hostels attached to the educational institutions will get vacated from March 21 and remain locked till March 31”, he said at a press meet.

Besides, Anganwadi centres would remain closed during the period and food grains under the relevant scheme for Anganwadi students would be provided to their guardians on a regular basis, he stated.

He also spoke on the advisory the State government had received from the Bureau of Immigration (BoI), which discouraged foreign travel.

The decisions were announced after a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, which also reviewed the precautionary initiatives to check the spread of the deadly virus.

Health officials confirmed that no positive case had so far been detected in the State.
