More than 1000 new coronavirus cases were recorded in South Lanarkshire last week.

Figures published by Public Health Scotland revealed there were 1052 new cases of the virus between Sunday, January 3, and Saturday, January 9 - up by 20 per cent on the previous week.

Case numbers in the region are at the highest in two months as 3.28 cases were recorded for every 1000 residents.

Last week, the Hamilton area saw the most cases at 334 while East Kilbride and Avondale saw more new cases than at any point in 2020 as 332 positive tests were recorded.

Rutherglen and Cambuslang saw 248 new Covid-19 cases last week while 138 were recorded in Clydesdale - the second highest for the region on record.

Rutherglen and Cambuslang had the highest rate of new cases last week at 3.94 per 1000 residents while rates in Hamilton area (3.3) and East Kilbride and Avondale (3.47) were lower.

Clydesdale (2.27) was the only region to see less than three cases per 1000 people last week.
