Covid-19 SAGE papers 'blackout' as releases paused in respect for Prince Philip

The release of SAGE Covid-19 papers has been paused during the "period of mourning" for Prince Philip.

Downing Street confirmed there would be an effective two-week blackout on documents from the government's science advice body for a week, out of respect for the late Duke of Edinburgh, who died last week.

Usually documents are published weekly, on Friday afternoons - and include minutes of meetings and records of scientific advice given to the Government.

They were last published on April 9, and it's understood they will not be published again until April 23.

The Prime Minister's official spokesman defended the blackout, saying: "As we have done throughout the pandemic we will continue to publish SAGE papers. If they aren't published this week, they will be published next week."

He said any information relating to immediate public health advice would still be published.

Number 10 confirmed on Sunday there would be an eight day "period of mourning" until Prince Philip's funeral tomorrow.

They said there would be no Covid press conferences, no press releases other than for essential public health reasons, and no ministers on media interviews.

“The Government understands that this is a difficult and sad time for many,” says a Cabinet Office document.

Ministers and civil servants were told they should wear dark clothes and a black tie in any public-facing events.

Ministers will also cancel planned visits and interviews - including daily interviews on breakfast TV slots and Sunday political shows.

Release of any routine government press releases and policies to the public are also paused.

But despite saying ministerial visits were off, Mr Johnson visited a passing-out parade in Dartmouth yesterday, and recorded a clip for broadcasters.
