COVID-19 outbreak worsens at Wellington, as four western NSW towns record new cases

The COVID-19 outbreak in western New South Wales has moved away from Dubbo with a nearby community recording a surge in the number of daily cases.

The town of Wellington is less than 50 kilometres away and has recorded dozens of cases in the past few days.

"We're very concerned about Wellington with more than 20 cases over the weekend and a further 11 cases today," Western NSW Local Health District (LHD) chief executive Scott McLachlan said.

The Western NSW LHD said it was increasing the level of support in Wellington with Aboriginal health workers, mobile testing teams, and in-home assistance so people did not need to leave their houses for groceries.

The spread of cases has alarmed the local community and residents are being urged to get tested and get vaccinated.

"Our priority this week is really for the community to stay safe and us to be able to provide vaccines to reduce potential risk down the track."

Boosting community support

The WACHS hosted a meeting with local stakeholders at the weekend to make sure people are supported and are able to stay at home and isolate if they do get COVID-19.

Mr Forrester said there were concerns about Nanima reserve.

"We're working with the lands council that has the tenancy of the properties out there and the community out there to stay at home, supplying PPE, finding out what household needs are," he said.

Cowra is the other western town concerning health officials.

Four new cases were recorded on Monday and the Western LHD said the patients were mainly primary-aged school children and household contacts.

Will lockdown return?

New infections have been detected in four communities that have recently been released from lockdown.

Cases were found in Narromine and Gilgandra over the weekend, as well as Blayney and Canowindra, near Orange, on Monday.

Mr McLachlan said the Blayney case was not infectious in the community but investigations were being carried out into the new infection at Canowindra.

"We know that they have been infectious in the community in a couple of locations and we've been able to make contact with those people, those venues.

Mr McLachlan said there was also no plan to reinstate the lockdown in Narromine and Gilgandra.

"Narromine definitely hasn't been infectious in the community and we've identified the Gilgandra as being very low risk," he said.

There has been another detection of COVID fragments in sewage in Oberon.

The Western LHD said it was the fourth or fifth positive sample in the past few weeks, which meant there was a very high risk that someone has COVID-19 in that community.

Do we really need booster vaccines for COVID-19?
