Covid-19 outbreak confirmed at Irish school as urgent letter sent to parents

An outbreak of Covid-19 has been confirmed at an Irish school as urgent letter was sent to parents.

Officials at the secondary school in Co Limerick confirmed that two cases of the virus had been identified.

And a notice sent to parents and guardians on Saturday said that all close contacts had been informed, and that for all other pupils it was safe to continue attending school as normal.

It reads: "Two confirmed cases of Covid-19 in your school have been notified to the Department of Public Health HSE Mid-West

"A public health risk assessment has been undertaken and any close contacts have been identified. and will be informed.

"If you are not identified as a close contact, you do not need a test for Covid-19, you can continue to attend school, and no further actions are required at this time."

Meanwhile a Covid-19 case was also confirmed at a secondary school in Co Louth.

Ballymakenny College sent a letter to parents and guardians on Sunday informing them that a student had tested positive for coronavirus.

A letter sent by the HSE reads: "A confirmed case of COVID19 in your child’s school has been notified to the Health Protection Team, Department of Public Health, HSE North-East.

"A public health risk assessment has been undertaken and the parents of children deemed to be close contacts of the confirmed case have been contacted and advised accordingly. If your child has not been identified as a close contact at this time, your child:

  • Does not need a test for COVID19, and
  • May continue to attend school.

"However, if your child develops any symptoms suggestive of COVID19 infection (such as a cough, a fever, loss or change in sense of taste or smell):

  • Do not send your child to school;
  • Telephone your GP/Out of Hours Service; and
  • Restrict your child’s movements, as per public health advice. "
